STAINED WALL at SPARC

In 2000, I began collecting marriage photographs which formerly belonged to divorced women. My desire to rescue these images stemmed from the complexity of how these beautiful pictures were images of a broken promise. Instead of being celebrated, they were being 'punished' by being discarded in a shoe box or shoved to the back of a drawer. I began to copy and repeat them in the form of collages where the remnants of sleeves became petals, and their silhouettes became flowers. These circular shapes took the form of mandalas, which were translated into a large-format wallpaper installation that unified the community of women that donated their photos to the project. By designing this wallpaper pattern, I was able to simultaneously show the large amount of participants all at once, along with their combined mandala gardens.
